The festive season is truly upon us. Trees are adorned with vibrant decorations, lights are twinkling, and the world is filled with a joyous atmosphere. These last few weeks of the first term can feel like a whirlwind, save yourself from the festive frenzy by following our top tips.
🎄 Set realistic expectations
Reevaluate your expectations of yourself and your students. Consider that students may be pulled out of lessons for nativity play rehearsal, church activities, or end-of-year trips. Plan your lessons accordingly, and consider a slightly different type of learning to let the festivities spread. A mixture of exciting activities such as quizzes and games as well as more calm activities such as crafting presents to give to the family will allow students to unwind from the chaos a little.
🎄 Be mindful
Consider different situations during the festive period and cater to these, for example, people may not be in a position financially to buy expensive gifts or host extravagant days. Use this opportunity to teach students about the non-material meaning of the holidays. When conversing about the upcoming days try and sway the conversation away from presents and focus on spending time with family and celebration. Create fun ways to fundraise for charities such as Delivering Joy to encourage students to get involved with the community and teach them about different upbringings and cultures.
🎄 Plan ahead
The time that students are crafting, rehearsing or watching creates ample opportunity for you to start the next term well and give yourself some extra time for relaxation over the break. Take a look at your classroom layout and assess what has worked and what hasn't. You may need to upgrade your furniture or switch around the layout of your classroom to encourage better learning practices.
