Children and young people in the UK should be taking part in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per day. This number reduces to 20 minutes for people with a disability.
Primary and Early Years leaders should be especially focussed on physical activity, as this is the period that brings about a positive and enjoyable attitude towards physical activity and fitness. There are many benefits to physical activity at a young age such as the development of strong coordination, stress relief and improved well-being, better overall health and building crucial social skills.
So what should schools do?
Schools should provide at least two hours per week of high-quality PE and sports, as well as a selection of extra-curricular activities that students are encouraged to participate in. These extracurricular activities often include competitive opportunities, which are great for building social skills and integrating students into the community via events.
Hosting successful sports days
Choose your date wisely! Most schools choose to host their sports days in the second half of the summer term, once the exam season is over. It is a good idea to plan your sports day with enough of the term left afterwards, in case you need to reschedule due to weather conditions etc.
Arrange a staff meeting: Prepare all members of staff well in advance, making them aware of the date so they can plan their teaching schedule around it, let them know their responsibilities of the day and encourage them to give some of the activities a try - after all the day will be fun for them too!
Create a plan for the day: Sports days are busy in schools, with lots of foot traffic from both children and supportive parents. Having a set schedule with clear areas for activities will help the day run seamlessly and safely.
Set up in advance: Use the time before the sports day to prepare game zones and spectator areas, and consider furniture choices for different spaces such as sports halls and outside. Here at Spaceforme, we can provide multi-functional furniture that can be used for a variety of environments
The en bob floor chair offers ergonomic back support for floor seating, promoting good posture and comfort. Ideal for classrooms, homes, and outdoor use, it features a weighted undercarriage for stability, whilst still allowing the user to rock back and forth. This is a brilliant solution for outdoor seating, allowing spectators to easily manoeuvre their seat, the one-size-fits-all approach to this chair means that it will provide long-term comfort for most people.
For a satisfyingly structured appearance consider our en one chair. The one-piece design, modern aesthetics and vibrant colours make this chair an obvious choice to wow visitors to the school. To help adhere to health and safety and fire safety regulations we have designed an optional linking device that pairs perfectly with the en one chair. This linking device allows you to create infinite rows of seating, allowing spectators to be comfortable and safe. Available in 16 brilliant colours there are plenty of options to create an environment that will show off your school branding.
